OUR ATMOSPHERE

What a record-breaking El Niño tells us about who is really in charge and why it has to stopYou have probably noticed the weather feels wrong.
Not wrong like a cold snap in spring. Wrong in a deeper way relentless, record-breaking, out of sequence with anything your grandparents would recognise.
Summers that don't end.
Storms arriving where storms don't belong.
Heat sitting over a continent like a lid on a pot.
This is not bad luck. This is a bill arriving.
Part One
Nature's Bill for Humanity's Recklessness
Right now, a Super El Niño is building in the Pacific at a speed and scale that has broken every historical benchmark scientists hold on record.
Here is how it works no jargon required.Normally, trade winds blow warm surface water westward across the Pacific.
When those winds weaken or reverse, that warm water sloshes back east.
Ocean temperatures spike sharply.
The atmosphere above it shifts. Jet streams bend.
Pressure systems that usually sit in one place migrate.
The entire global weather machine the one your food supply, water supply, and seasonal rhythms all depend on changes gear.
A regular El Niño does this mildly.A Super El Niño does it like a hammer. What the data actually shows right now.The 2026 event has already surpassed the last Super El Niño (2015–2016) in both speed and strengthA Kelvin Wave — a massive pulse of heat moving eastward through the deep Pacific — is carrying peak anomalies over 9 degrees above normalWesterly wind anomalies across the equatorial Pacific just set a record across an 86-year datasetThe NOAA Multivariate ENSO Index hit its highest June–July value since records began in 1979Every new forecast from ECMWF and NOAA pushes the projected peak higherWhat this means for ordinary people:
Europe: warmer, wetter, stormier winters persistent Atlantic low-pressure systems, above-normal temperatures across central, western, and southeastern regions
• North America: a split season mild north, an unusually active storm track driving snowstorm potential in regions not built for itGlobal food systems: disrupted growing seasons, failed harvests, elevated prices costs distributed to everyone, profits absorbed by a few. This is the physical reality.
What is fuelling it is where the conversation gets deliberately, conveniently quiet.
Part TwoThe recipe how storms are built
Watch a Caribbean hurricane form and you see one of nature's most powerful systems.
A pocket of warm, moist air rises. The surrounding atmosphere rushes in to fill the void. The whole thing begins to rotate.
Within days sometimes hours what began as a disturbance in the tropics becomes a thousand mile wide engine of destruction, crossing the Atlantic and arriving at coastlines in the UK and beyond, bringing winds that uproot centuries-old trees, flood streets, and leave damage that takes years to repair.
There are many things in life that are invisible but that does not mean it will not effect you.
H2S on a oil drilling rig floor you won't see it coming and you won't want to be standing there when it arrives.
The path weather takes you may not see until it arrives.
Like red sands carried on the winds from Africa it will arrive in the Caribean on tradewinds as well without a formal invite it's just there thousands of miles from where it was picked up.
That is the evidence. Now consider this.Every time a bomb detonates over a city, every time an oil field is set ablaze, every time an arms convoy burns a column of superheated gas and particulate matter punches upward into the atmosphere.A mushroom cloud of heat, soot, and toxic compounds rises into the jet stream. That cloud is a storm being assembled. Not a storm that will arrive in days.
A storm that will travel in weeks and months, carried on the same winds that carry hurricanes, depositing its cargo wherever the atmosphere decides on farmland, on cities, on coastlines, on children thousands of miles from the decision that created it.
What war actually releases into the air we all breathe.Black carbon and ultrafine soot particles small enough to bypass every filter your body possesses, penetrating deep into lung tissue, carrying carcinogenic compounds that remain active long after they land.Toxic combustion products from destroyed industrial sites, chemical stores, and military munitions compounds that do not degrade quickly and do not appear on the civilian pollution monitors that trigger public health alerts.Depleted uranium and heavy metal aerosols from certain weapons systems with documented long-term contamination in conflict regions lasting decades.Massive CO₂ and methane pulses from pipeline fires, burning infrastructure, and military logistics chains that are among the most fuel-intensive operations humans conduct.Persistent organic pollutants that bond to fine particles, travel globally, and bioaccumulate in food chains entering the body of someone who has never heard of the conflict that produced them. When these particles enter the jet stream the real damage is invisible, the jet stream does not file a flight path through neutral territory. It carries what it carries pollen, moisture, and carcinogens across every border men dreamed up, depositing its cargo wherever the wind decides. The satellite data tracking this exists. The atmospheric chemistry models mapping this dispersal exist. They are not assembled into a format that makes the connection visible to the public.
Because if they were, the question of who is poisoning whose air would become impossible to avoid.
The Stockholm Environment InstituteAn independent research body established by the Swedish Parliament in 1989 and operating across eight global centres, has spent decades documenting what the atmosphere carries that official emissions registers do not count.Their researchers work across air, climate, and health — and the gap they keep returning to is the same one this paper describes. The things released into shared air that no border contains and no ledger fully records. As of September 2026, SEI researchers are actively documenting the environmental destruction from the war in Ukraine, noting that accountability and restoration depend on recording what was put into land, water, and atmosphere before any recovery can begin.Their broader work, alongside the Conflict and Environment Observatory, has confirmed what atmospheric physics already tells us most of the world's sixty largest military spenders do not fully disclose their greenhouse gas emissions,
Leaving what researchers now call a military emissions gap a structural blind spot in global climate accounting that exempts one of the most carbon-intensive sectors from the transparency required of every other.
The Paris Agreement itself does not require military disclosure.Russia reported a drop in emissions in 2022 the year it launched a full-scale land war. It is physically impossible for a fossil-fuel-intensive war to result in a drop in emissions. These are not accounting errors. They are accounting choices. And the atmosphere, which does not read ledgers, carries the consequence regardless.Part Three. We Have Been Warned Before
This is not the first time, one woman armed with data, dismissed by industry, and ignored by governments told us exactly this.
In 1962, a marine biologist named Rachel Carson published Silent Spring. It documented something that the chemical industry of the time insisted was impossible,
That synthetic pesticides like DDT, sprayed in one location, were appearing everywhere in the fat of fish in remote Arctic waters, in the eggs of birds that had never been near a farm, in the breast milk of mothers thousands of miles from the nearest crop-duster.
The industry's response was immediate and ferocious.
They called her hysterical.
They questioned her science.
They questioned her motives.
They spent heavily to discredit her.
She was right.
The most important legacy of Silent Spring was a new public awareness that nature was vulnerable to human intervention that technological progress, at times, is so fundamentally at odds with natural processes that it must be curtailed.Carson argued that people have a right to know what they are being exposed to and what risks are posed drawing a direct parallel between pesticide contamination and the fallout from the regular testing of nuclear weapons. The parallel to today is not metaphorical. It is literal.
The PCBs and DDT that Carson documented did not stay where they were applied.
The ongoing legacy of PCBs, banned decades ago, is still abundant in the ocean today.
Persistent organic pollutants the same class of compounds now being released in conflict zones, in industrial fires, in the combustion of modern weapons bond to fine particles, enter the jet stream, travel the globe, and accumulate in living tissue. They do not degrade on a human timescale. They do not stop at borders. They do not spare the children of the people who released them. The chemicals of today are not the same as the ones Carson indicted in Silent Spring, yet they are produced, sold, and used on an unsuspecting public by the same interconnected complex of profit-driven companies and government authorities.Carson wrote that no witchcraft, no enemy action had silenced the birds and poisoned the streams and blighted the land. The people had done it themselves.Sixty years later, the springs are quieter still. The compounds are different. The mechanism release without consent, disperse without border, accumulate without mercy is identical. We were warned. We had the proof.
We had the science.
We chose
as a civilisation, to let the same system that silenced Carson continue operating under new names, with new products, in new conflicts, on a warming planet that can no longer absorb the cost.
The question is not whether we knew. The question is whether this generation finally acts on what we know.Part Four. The Economics of the Abyss
Here is the arithmetic that the powerful do not want taught in schools.
The resource equation of war,
The fossil fuels burned in a single month of sustained conventional warfare would power millions of homes
• The rare earth materials in one advanced weapons programme could build renewable energy infrastructure for a mid-sized country• The engineering talent designing the next generation of munitions could, redirected, design the water, food, and energy systems that make resource conflicts unnecessary. The cost equation who pays, who profitsConflicts spike global energy prices: the ordinary person pays at the pump and the meter.Disrupted growing seasons from climate chaos raise food costs. The ordinary person pays at the till
Increased extreme weather events drive insurance prices up.
The ordinary person loses coverage or pays more for itDefence contractors, fossil fuel majors, and commodity speculators record profits during the same periodsThe person who made no decision, signed no order, voted for none of this, absorbs the cost. The person whose decision created the cost extracts the profit. This is not a conspiracy. It is a ledger. And the ledger has been kept — by climate scientists, by public health researchers, by economists — for decades. It is simply not the ledger that gets read on the evening news.Part Five. What Pushing Back Actually Looks LikePushing back does not begin with a revolution. It begins with a question asked plainly, asked repeatedly, asked by enough people that it becomes impossible to deflect. The questions that matterWhen a government increases military expenditure, ask. what is the atmospheric cost of this decision, and who pays it?When you are told climate action is too expensive, ask: compared to what?
Compared to a Super El Niño winter hitting food, energy, and insurance simultaneously?
When a leader who has funded or facilitated conflict tells you they care about your children's future,
ask: which children?
When extreme weather is described as unprecedented or unpredictable, ask by whom, and when did they know? These are not radical questions. They are accounting questions. The books have been cooked for generations.Basic numeracy applied to carbon, to public health, to the true cost of war is the most powerful tool available to an ordinary person without a platform, a trust fund, or a seat at the table. What learning the science actually gives you.Understanding what a jet stream is means you cannot be told weather is random.Understanding what a Kelvin Wave does means you cannot be told ocean warming is natural and unconnected.Understanding how particulate matter disperses means you cannot be told what happens in someone else's war stays in someone else's war.Knowledge is not neutral.
In the hands of an informed population, it is the one thing that cannot be bombed, cannot be bought, and cannot be silenced indefinitely.
Part Six.
The Generation That Inherits This
No child alive today voted for any of it.
Not for the fossil fuel infrastructure built before they were born. Not for the conflicts pumping carcinogens into the atmosphere they will breathe for the rest of their lives. Not for the political and financial arrangements that concentrated the decisions in the hands of those least affected by the consequences. They will inherit a Super El Niño that breaks records not yet written. An atmosphere altered by the sum of every choice this generation and the generations before it made and every choice we failed to make. The minimum we owe them is the truth. Not the sanitised version where weather is weather and war is war and economics is economics and nothing connects. The true version where our atmosphere wraps this entire planet, carries everything we put into it, everywhere, without exception, and presents the bill to everyone regardless of guilt or innocence. The Single Most Important FactThere is one atmosphere. Not one for the wealthy and one for the poor.
Not one for the powerful and one for those who absorb the consequences of power.
Not one for the nations that start wars and one for the nations that receive their fallout.
One atmosphere. Shared. Indivisible. The Super El Niño building right now in the Pacific does not know the name of the politician who cut the climate budget. It does not know the CEO who lobbied against the emissions standard. It does not know the general who ordered the strike on the oil refinery. But it will find their cities.
Their coastlines. Their grandchildren's food and water.
That is what one atmosphere means not as poetry, but as physics.
The hurricane that forms in warm Caribbean waters and arrives battered on British shores a week later does not ask for permission. The mushroom cloud that rises over a bombed city and joins the jet stream does not stop at the border. The Kelvin Wave building in the deep Pacific does not wait for a peace agreement. These are not separate storiesThey are one story, told in the only language the atmosphere speaks cause and consequence, carried on the wind. You have just read one version of the truth.Share it.
Argue with it.
Improve on it with what you know from where you live.
Translate it.
Put it somewhere it will be read by someone who has not seen it yet.
But do not let anyone tell you it is too complicated to understand, or too big to do anything about, or someone else's problem to solve. It is the air you are breathing right now. It belongs to all of us. And so does the responsibility for what we do next.Sources: Severe Weather Europe Super El Niño Forecast, August 2026 | NOAA ENSO Index & MEI Data | ECMWF Seasonal Forecast Models | ERA5 Reanalysis | WHO Environmental Health Data | Rachel Carson, Silent Spring (1962) | Stockholm Environment Institute (sei.org) Ukraine's green recovery starts with documenting war damage, 17 September 2026 | Conflict and Environment Observatory & Griffith University briefing, November 2025 Accounting for the Uncounted | SIPRI Military Expenditure Database 2024. | NRDC The Story of Silent Spring | American Chemical Society Legacy of Rachel Carson
